The Museum of Contemporary Art of the Republic of Srpska is embarking on an exciting transformation as it unveils a mesmerizing rebranding process of its visual identity. This ambitious endeavor seeks to breathe new life into the institution, showcasing its commitment to artistic innovation and capturing the essence of contemporary culture.

A team of talented designers and experts have poured their creative energy into this extensive project, dedicated to revitalizing the museum’s visual presence. The result is a stunning visual identity that resonates with the vibrant spirit of contemporary art while honoring the museum’s role as a cultural cornerstone.

The great advantage of the whole project is based on the international nature of the team composition. This institution brought together two young designers, Sonja Jovanović (SRB) and Luka Matić (BiH). Two of them are a team that turned out to be an excellent combination. The personal sensibilities of the young designers when it comes to aesthetics, practical and theoretical knowledge, attitude towards design and solutions to structural problems complemented each other and ultimately produced excellent results. Throughout the project, they have the mentoring support of three design experts, Nemanja Mićić (BiH), Wolfgang Fiel (AT) and Constantin Demner (AT). A local mentor tried to contribute to the symbiosis of the different sensibilities of Sonja and Luka. On the other hand, the presence of EU mentors complemented this team by providing valuable guidance and support throughout the rebranding process, offering general guidelines, feedback during the work process, and assistance in selecting the best solutions.

The availability of different communication channels speeds up the work process and definitely helps to overcome the lack of direct contact. Also, the candidates had the opportunity to visit the Museum of Contemporary Art of the Republic of Srpska twice in March 2022 and February 2023, and in that way establish a direct relationship with the client, which, regardless of the above, is very important. Intensive online communication and occasional direct contacts were a winning combination in case personal meetings were impossible due to geographical distance.

The rebranding process has been meticulously crafted, with each phase contributing to the development of a cohesive and impactful visual system. The journey began with thorough research and analysis, delving into the museum’s history, collection, and aspirations. This deep understanding of the institution’s identity laid the foundation for the subsequent stages, ensuring that the rebranding efforts would authentically reflect its essence.

Building upon the insights gained during the research phase, the team embarked on a voyage of creative exploration. Through a collaborative and iterative process, a multitude of concepts were explored, pushing the boundaries of artistic expression. The team’s dedication to innovation, combined with immersive visits to the museum and consultations with art experts, resulted in a visual identity that captures the spirit of contemporary art in all its forms. The background of a clear picture for the team lay in interactive approaches during the museum visits. Young designers experienced expert guidance through Goranka Matić’s retrospective exhibition “Experience in the Crowd” and got to know the potential and challenges of the exhibition space. Also, the young designers had the opportunity to visit the printing houses with which the Museum cooperates and to meet local artists and creative people in order to get to know the scene as well as possible and the possibility of cooperation on the production of materials for the gift shop.

From the selection of color palettes to the typography choices, every element of the rebranding has been carefully crafted to evoke a sense of curiosity. The team’s attention to detail ensures that the new visual identity seamlessly integrates across various platforms, including signage, promotional materials, and digital media. This harmonious fusion of design elements creates an immersive and captivating experience for visitors, sparking their imagination and inviting them to explore the “time” of contemporary art.

The team occasionally faced the challenge of productivity and consistency in work. The three-year duration of this project, although necessary, can pose challenges in maintaining a high level of productivity, particularly for young designers with limited experience. The three-year duration of this project offers an opportunity for continuous growth and progress. While it is important to address the potential challenge of energy dispersal over such a prolonged period, it also allows for valuable learning experiences and the ability to build upon previous accomplishments. By effectively managing and maintaining focus, we can ensure that revisiting and refining previous tasks becomes a rewarding part of the journey toward success.

As the project continues to unfold, the team remains committed to excellence. They recognize that the success of the rebranding lies not only in the visual impact it creates but also in its ability to resonate with the museum’s audience. By striking a delicate balance between artistic expression and accessibility, the team aims to inspire a broader audience, fostering a deeper appreciation for contemporary art and its role in society.

The Museum of Contemporary Art of the Republic of Srpska’s journey toward unveiling its new visual identity is a testament to its dedication to artistic innovation. Through this rebranding, the museum reaffirms its position as a vibrant hub for contemporary culture in the Western Balkans region, offering a dynamic and immersive experience for art enthusiasts and the local community alike.
